Fosamax (also known by its generic version alendronate) was approved in 1995 to improve bone density and treat osteoperosis. Since that time, however, Fosamax has been linked to low-energy fractures of the femur (or thigh bone). The drug’s manufacturer, Merck & Co., Inc., is now facing hundreds of lawsuits for failing to adequately warn patients about these serious Fosamax side effects.

Fosamax and Femur Fractures

In 2008, the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma published the results of an observational study of 70 patients. Of the patients using Fosamax for an average of five years, 76% suffered femoral stress fractures with little or no trauma.

In October 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") issued a Safety Announcement to physicians and patients about these Fosamax side effects. The FDA stated that although the cause was unclear, "these unusual femur fractures have been predominantly reported in patients taking bisphosphonates [such as Fosamax]."

In February 2011, the Journal of the American Medical Association published the results of a Canadian study which further examined Fosamax side effects. Again, the results suggested that long-term users of Fosamax were three times as likely to suffer unusual femur fractures (as compared to patients with only transient exposure to the drug).
